Ingredients

This beef sausage hotpot is ultra comforting and so simple to make!

For the beef Sausages & Base

  • 125g / 4.5oz diced Smoked Turkey Bacon Lardons
  • 6 beef Sausages
  • 1 large White Onion, diced
  • 2 medium Carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves of Garlic, finely diced
  • 3 tbsp / 45g Butter
  • 3 tbsp Plain Flour
  • 480ml / 2 cups Beef Stock
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon Mustard
  • 1/4 tsp EACH: Dried Rosemary, Dried Thyme, Black Pepper
  • 1x Beef Oxo/Bouillon Cube, crumbled

For the Topping

  • 400g / 14oz Baby Potatoes, sliced (or as needed to cover the top)
  • 1 tbsp Butter, melted
  • finely diced Chives, to garnish
  • Salt, as needed

How to Make beef Sausage Hotpot

Step 1: Fry the Meats

Fry the Turkey Bacon in a large pan over medium heat until crisp with the fat rendered. Remove it from the pan and place it aside, leaving the fat behind. Raise the heat slightly then fry the beef sausages until browned. They don’t need to be fully cooked at this point; they will finish cooking later. Remove them from the pan as well, leaving any excess fat behind. Slice into pieces just before adding them back.

Step 2: Cook Vegetables

Lower the heat back to medium. Add the carrot and onion to the pan, frying until soft and lightly colored. If needed, add some butter if the pan dries out. Add garlic next and fry for about 30 seconds before melting in more butter. Stir in flour to create a roux before gradually adding in stock while stirring continuously to prevent lumps.

Step 3: Combine Ingredients

Stir in Worcestershire sauce, herbs, pepper, Oxo cube, mustard, cooked Turkey Bacon, and chopped beef sausages (along with any resting juices). Pour this mixture into a baking dish and let it sit for about 15 minutes until a skin forms on top.

Step 4: Prepare Potatoes

Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 180C/350F. Slice baby potatoes about 1/4 inch thick. Lay these slices over the filling starting from outside in an overlapping fashion. Brush with melted butter and season generously with salt.

Step 5: Bake

Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. After that time has passed, remove the foil, increase temperature to 200C/400F, then cook uncovered for another 20 minutes until potatoes are tender. For extra crispiness on top, turn on your grill/broiler briefly at the end.

Step 6: Serve

Allow it to rest for about five minutes so that filling can settle down. Sprinkle with chives before serving warm!

How to Serve beef Sausage Hotpot

beef Sausage hotpot is a hearty dish that warms the soul. It’s perfect for family dinners or cozy gatherings. Here are some serving suggestions to elevate your meal.

With Fresh Bread

  • Crusty Baguette – Pair your hotpot with a crusty baguette for dipping into the savory sauce.
  • Garlic Bread – Serve with garlic bread for an aromatic twist that complements the flavors.

Topped with Fresh Herbs

  • Chopped Parsley – Sprinkle fresh parsley on top for a burst of color and freshness.
  • Diced Chives – Add finely chopped chives for a subtle onion flavor and a pop of green.

Accompanied by Salad

  • Mixed Green Salad – A light salad with mixed greens and vinaigrette balances the richness of the hotpot.
  • Coleslaw – Creamy coleslaw adds crunch and contrasts nicely with the soft potatoes.

How to Perfect beef Sausage Hotpot

Creating the perfect beef sausage hotpot is all about technique and quality ingredients. Here are some tips to ensure you get it just right.

  • Use Quality beef Sausages – Choose high-quality beef sausages for better flavor and texture.
  • Don’t Rush the Browning – Take your time when browning beef sausages; this enhances their flavor significantly.
  • Adjust Seasoning to Taste – Always taste your filling before baking; adjust salt and pepper as needed.
  • Layer Potatoes Neatly – Overlapping potato slices not only looks appealing but helps them cook evenly.
  • Broil for Crispiness – Finish under the broiler for a few minutes to achieve crispy potato tops.

Best Side Dishes for beef Sausage Hotpot

To complete your meal, consider adding some side dishes that pair well with beef sausage hotpot. Here are some great options.

  1. Steamed Broccoli – A simple side of steamed broccoli adds nutrients and color.
  2. Roasted Carrots – Sweet, caramelized roasted carrots enhance the overall flavor profile.
  3. Cauliflower Mash – Creamy cauliflower mash is a low-carb alternative that pairs beautifully.
  4. Baked Beans – Serve alongside sweet baked beans for a comforting combination.
  5. Crispy Brussels Sprouts – Roasted Brussels sprouts add crunch and depth to your meal.
  6. Garden Peas – Bright green peas provide a fresh contrast to the rich hotpot.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Making a beef Sausage Hotpot can be easy, but there are common mistakes that can affect the final dish. Here are some pitfalls to watch for:

  • Skipping the Browning Step: Not browning the beef sausages and turkey bacon properly can lead to a lack of flavor. Always take the time to sear them until golden before adding to the pot.
  • Neglecting Vegetable Prep: Cutting vegetables inconsistently can result in uneven cooking. Make sure to dice your onions and carrots uniformly for thorough cooking.
  • Rushing the Roux: If you rush making the roux by adding stock too quickly, lumps will form. Allow the flour to cook slightly before gradually mixing in the stock.
  • Ignoring Seasoning Levels: Failing to taste and adjust seasoning during cooking can leave your hotpot bland. Always season throughout the cooking process.
  • Overcrowding the Baking Dish: Packing too many ingredients into your baking dish can lead to uneven cooking. Ensure there is enough space for everything to cook evenly.
  • Not Resting Before Serving: Serving immediately after baking may cause the filling to be too hot and messy. Let it rest for a few minutes for better results.
